Tarran Mackenzie was 0.055 seconds from an incredible victory in the Motostar British Championship after starting from last on the grid at Oulton Park yesterday.

In what could have been a dream end to a frantic Bank Holiday weekend of racing that began in Southern Spain and finished in sunny Cheshire, 17-year old engineering student ‘Taz’ still leads the British Moto3 championship aboard his Redline Motorcycles KTM after an amazing second place on Monday (May 6).

Due to commitments racing in the KTM-powered Red Bull Rookies championship at Jerez, Spain, on Saturday and Sunday (May 4-5), the youngest son of Niall Mackenzie missed practice and qualifying at Oulton. Having taken part in a track day prior to the event, the Redline rider was allowed to start his KTM RC 250 R Moto3 machine from the back of the grid.

When the lights went out, the number 95 orange machine left the grid last and 29th place to complete an unbelievable first lap where he made up twenty places. Within 11 laps, Tarran had caught and passed championship rival, Joe Frances, to set-up a thrilling finale to the race. Despite all his hard efforts, Frances was able to pull a pass on Taz for the win and to cut the KTM rider’s championship lead down to five points.

Tarran Mackenzie said: “Well that was an eventful weekend! First of all I need to thank Stuart Higgs (BSB Race Director) for allowing me to start the race on Monday despite missing practice and qualifying.

“Even with my grid position, I felt confident for the win as I feel so good on the bike and with the team. The first lap was crazy – passing 20 riders – and I caught the leaders pretty easily. But when I hit the front that woke up Joe Francis and I pulled him along with me. Hats off to him as he defended well to get the win.

“Definitely one of my best ever races but in some ways I’m annoyed as victory was close and my lead in championship has been cut down to five points. But to get second from the back of the grid, I guess I can’t complain really.”

Congratulations also to Joe Irving taking third spot on his RS Racing / The Toad and Tatie Pub KTM.

Tarran Mackenzie and the Redline Motorcycles team will be in action again on June 16 at Knockhill in Scotland

One new KTM owner will win the price of their bike back!

As part of its Orange Days promotion, KTM will refund the cash price of a bike to one UK rider who has booked a demo ride during the month of May and gone on to purchase a motorcycle from its Street range.*

In addition, two runner-up prizes will be offered; one year’s bike insurance courtesy of KTM Insurance Services** and a £250 voucher to spend on KTM PowerParts and PowerWear.

The winner and two runners-up will be chosen at random and announced at the beginning of June.

The test ride booking process is simple and completed via www.ktm.com where riders can pick the bike they want to ride from a KTM Street dealer of their choice.

KTM UK Managing Director, Shaun Sisterson, explains: “Each year for Orange Days we try to do something even more exciting than the previous one. As our Street range continues to grow, we want riders to experience the thrill of riding a KTM and the best way of doing this is by taking one for a demo ride. For one lucky rider, a simple test ride that leads to a purchase could see them end up with not only a fantastic new bike, but also the cash equivalent back!”

To find your nearest KTM dealer or request a test ride, visit the Dealer and Service pages of www.ktm.com

*Subject to demo bike availability, not all models are available at all dealers.

** Insurance up to the value of £500

Terms and conditions apply, for full details please see the Orange Days pages on www.ktm.com

The 2013 KTM 125 Duke is the first 125cc motorcycle to come with ABS fitted as standard and is, once again, available with a free insurance offer and finance options including 0% APR* Representative.

Launched in 2011, the 125 Duke quickly became Europe’s biggest selling 125 thanks to its aggressive styling with ‘big bike’ performance and feel that suits not only new riders, but experienced riders and those looking for an exciting way to commute but with low running costs.

Speaking of reducing costs, the 125 is still available with free Third Party Only insurance or with subsidised Third Party Fire and Theft and Comprehensive cover (*terms and conditions apply). Along with this, riders can also take advantage of some amazing finance deals on the entry-level Duke, including 0% APR* over 2 years with minimum 50% deposit and monthly payments from as little as £83.23, or 8.9% APR** over 3 years with no minimum deposit with KTM Finance, powered by Santander.

The driving force behind the 125 Duke is its specially developed, state-of-the-art four-stroke single with a sophisticated DOHC four-valve cylinder head and liquid cooling.

The Duke delivers 15hp without breaking a sweat. The extremely economical engine not only has a well-balanced power delivery but also great refinement, thanks to an integrated balancer shaft. An advanced electronic fuel injection and three-way catalytic converter ensure clean emissions.

On the chassis performance side, a very light steel trellis frame equipped with high quality WP suspension components and Brembo-developed brakes is the basis for dynamic fun in the twisties and through traffic.

Being the first bike in its class to have Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) fitted as standard is part of KTM’s commitment to give riders an extra layer of security when road conditions become tricky.

The 125 Duke costs £3995 and its trademark orange graphic is bolstered by the option of a new white colour scheme in 2013. Make no mistake – the 125 Duke is a real KTM.

Luis Salom’s move was a copybook performance in the closing stages of the race, reminiscent of last year’s World Champion Sandro Cortese of the same factory team. Cortese has now moved up to Moto2 and Salom has slipped very comfortably into his place with teammates Zulfahmi Khairuddin of Malaysia and Australian teenager Arthur Sissis.

Spanish talent Maverick Viñales was second, riding a great race having to deal with the pain of a yet to heal hand injury. He lost the top of his finger in a training crash recently and had to have corrective surgery. He only had the stitches removed in Qatar. Alex Rins and Alex Márquez completed the four way, all Spanish, all KTM sweep, underlining that this year’s Moto3 series is set to deliver the same thrilling racing action as the debut series did in 2012.

It was clear from the moment that the riders accelerated off the start grid that this was going to be a battle between a handful of riders who quickly made their presence felt. Salom started on pole, the first of his career but right alongside him was Viñales, who this year is also riding the KTM RC250 GP. Rins, also on a KTM, joined the battle at the front in the opening phase along with Jonas Folger of Germany on the very competitive KALEX-KTM.

Salom’s victory meant that the Red Bull KTM Ajo Factory Team has begun the season with the same winning ways as it closed 2012. Khairuddin finished sixth and Sissis was eighth to underline the team’s strength.

Pit Beirer, Head of KTM Motorsports was in Qatar to watch the opener. “This year we made another big step with the bike and clearly this has paid off. There has been a tremendous amount of work by the mechanics and engineers both at the Mattighofen factory and with the teams and I have to thank them for that. It looks like this year KTM has really arrived back in the road racing scene.” He said all indications are that there will be a lot of competition between the teams running the KTM Moto3 bike and KTM-driven KALEX. “Competition is going to be tough and it’s going to be a very exciting year,” he added.

Results Moto3 Qatar, Round 1

The 690 Duke R (£8795), launched in 2013, will be used by series partner, STIHL, for pillion rides it offers at each round to its guests, VIPs and competition winners.

The R model is a more track-focussed version of the 690 Duke and is based on the 2012 European Junior Cup race bikes; it boasts the most powerful single-cylinder production bike engine while being incredibly fuel efficient. The naked machine from the Austrian factory also features a vast array of top specification components on its 150kg lightweight frame from Brembo and WP Suspension.

Working with its network of dealers, KTM UK will also be present at many rounds with its events truck to display a wide range of its 2013 model line-up, including the revised for 2013 RC8 R, all-new 1190 Adventure and the 125 Duke – the biggest selling 125 in Europe and first in its class to come with ABS as standard.

On receiving the KTM 690 Duke R ahead of the first round at Brands Hatch on April 7, MCE BSB Series Director, Stuart Higgs, said: “It’s fantastic that KTM once again have a presence within the MCE British Superbike Championship, realising the potential audience this exciting series offers for its products. As a partner of the Championship, STIHL guests have been thrilled at events for the past two seasons with high-speed pillion laps on the KTM RC8 R and we are delighted that this year we can offer another bold model for guests to experience.”

The new KTM 1190 Adventure and Adventure R have arrived at UK, Ireland, Isle of Man and Channel Island showrooms with demonstrator bikes available to ride at every KTM Street dealer now.

The 1190 Adventure, £12,595, is above all focused on tarmac; the use of wide 19in front and 17in rear tyres meets the demands of riders looking for a machine capable of mastering big distances while delivering big smiles. This is helped with multiple adjustments for rider position, unmatched power and weight figures in its class and the use of high specification equipment and technology.

The 1195cc V-twin features a multi-level combined Bosch ABS system and newly developed motorcycle traction control (MTC) as standard. In addition an optional factory-fit electronics package (£500) provides multi-programmable electronic WP suspension (EDS) adjustment and a tyre pressure measurement system (TPMS).

With 17 world titles in 2012 and 219 overall, no other manufacturer can boast such off-road success as KTM. The Adventure R, £13,195, continues the Austrian brand’s ability to offer a big Adventure bike with true off-road capability. With its 21in and 18in wheels and longer travel suspension it is perfect for riders who don’t like to take the beaten path.

On top of these developments – and over the predecessor 990 Adventure – both models feature increased tank capacity by 3.5 litres to 23 litres and extended service intervals to 15,000km (9,320 miles).

All KTM test rides are free of charge and can be booked online, but riders are urged to check ahead to make sure they are eligible to take out an 1190 Adventure on a demo ride due to each dealership having its own separate insurance policy.

The next step on the KTM riding ladder has double the power of the 125 Duke for just £200 more

The eagerly awaited 200 Duke has now arrived at British and Irish KTM dealers.

With little diversity of small capacity bikes available over the 125cc sector that deliver big kicks, the next logical step for KTM was to expand on its massively popular 125 Duke with a 200cc version.

The 125 Duke was revered for its style and specification when it was launched and so the 200 Duke is physically identical to its ‘little’ brother but packs more punch. With a chassis that was over-engineered to handle a progression in displacement, the 200 Duke has almost double the power of the 125 and, at £3995, costs just £200 more.

The main difference is a larger displacement; expanded to 199.5 cc by a new cylinder with a 72 mm bore and 49 mm stroke. Rather than just having a bigger piston, a newly developed cylinder head, valves as well as new intake and exhaust systems were specially designed by KTM for the 200.

Only available in orange, the new 200 Duke delivers 27 hp with a beautifully rounded power curve, highlighting once more the sporting DNA of this state-of-the-art single cylinder design. While the 125 Duke offers excellent performance for its class, the 200 Duke delivers a real punch, not the least due to its very low weight of only 125 kg.

The powerful new engine is backed by a strong-yet-light trellis frame finished with outstanding suspension and braking components, allowing riders to exploit the power of the engine – simply one of the best lightweight sport bikes for any day of the week.

Travelling Doctor uses KTM RC8 R power for rapid response

Racers and spectators at Irish Road Race meetings will have rapid response medical support in the form of a 175hp KTM RC8 R as part of its “Travelling Doctor’” system in 2012.

Doctor John Hinds, 32, as a member of the Motorcycle Union of Ireland (MCUI) medical team, has chosen a RC8 R - currently available for £12,995 with finance offers that include 0% interest with a £99 deposit – as his way of getting life saving care and triage to a rider quickly and safely.

The “Traveling Doctor” system has evolved over the years as a way of providing fast and lifesaving medical care to riders at Irish Road racing meetings. The environment which with the medical staff work in is unique and the circuits can vary from 3 to 9 miles in length; so are too long to staff with ground crews like at British Superbikes, but too short to use a helicopter effectively like at the Isle of Man TT. The nature of these courses also make it difficult to have a fast “first response” with a car or regular ambulance.

The motorcycle-mounted doctors – Dr. John Hinds and Dr. Fred MacSorley – chase the warm-up and opening lap of each race or practice session at each event as this is historically when most serious incidents tend to occur. During racing they are parked up strategically with radio contact, helmets on and ready to be scrambled immediately and can assess, triage and begin treatment, and are backed up by response vehicles staffed by experienced doctors and paramedics.

The bikes the traveling doctors use are their own and the road racing circuits are exceptionally hard on a motorcycle. The wear and tear of jumps, bumps and high speed runs each and every weekend mean maintenance is an ongoing battle of attrition – tyres, oil and filters every weekend; screens full of stone chips, suspension being put through it’s full crashing strokes every lap on the jumps that make the Irish road circuits unique in what they are. On average, Dr. John will cover around 4000 race miles a year.

Firstly, I have had Japanese inline fours for 10 years and wanted something different. Secondly, and more importantly, I needed a bike that was reliable and had good dealer back-up as I know how many serviceable items I get though in a year.

“The job I use the bike for means that a machine that won’t start on the button could mean the difference between life and death. Who better then to buy a bike off than Northern Ireland KTM dealer and road racing legend Phillip McCallen! If ever there was a man who knows if a bike will work on a road circuit, it’s him; and the RC8 R came highly recommended from the man himself. The fact that Northern Ireland ex-MotoGP star Jeremy McWilliams owns one himself meant the decision was made!”

John will be on call at the 90th Cookstown 100 this weekend, April 27-28, 2012.
